ABOUT THE COMMUNITY PARTNER LISTSERV The listserv focuses on issues specific to the community partner perspective when engaged in community-higher education partnerships. The listserv aims to support conversations emerging among community partners engaged in community-higher education partnerships who are seeking to bring sustainable and systemic change through their work. While we do not want the listserv to be viewed as an exclusive entity that denies access or involvement by our university partners, we do want to maintain an environment where community partners can share concerns, frustrations, challenges and successes in order to problem-solve with other community partners, learn from each others' experiences and not recreate the wheel. HOW THE LISTSERV ORIGINATED With guidance from a planning committee of community leaders, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health convened a Community Partner Summit in April 2006 at the Wingspread Conference Center in Racine, Wisconsin. A diverse group of 23 community leaders, each with years of experience in community-higher education partnerships, engaged in a dialogue that emphasized lessons learned and generated recommendations and action steps that participants are taking individually and collectively. (See the Community Partner Summit webpage at http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/cps.html) Many of the actionable recommendations that came around this Summit centered on the idea that community partners involved in community-higher education partnerships need to have greater opportunities for growing and sustaining connections with other community partners. The purposes of these connections would be to increase our own and each others' capacity, offer deeper support in this important yet challenging work, and support our partnerships in their effort to truly prioritize systemic, social change. This listserv is one mechanism for staying connected. WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN THE LISTSERV? Community Partner Listserv participants can fall into any of these categories: 1) Community residents, grassroots community activists, community organizers, and/or individuals who work for community-based organizations who are interested or involved in one or more community-higher education partnerships. 2) Individuals who serve as liaisons between communities and higher academic institutions and see themselves as advocates of the communities within these partnerships. As this community-higher education partnership work has grown deeper roots within higher educational institutions in the last 10 years, the people that are doing this work on behalf of these institutions are beginning to change. This has resulted in a relatively new group of people hired to be the liaisons between universities and communities. We recognize that these liaisons play important roles in community-higher education partnership work when the liaisons see themselves as advocates of the community within the partnership. The list is administered by Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH), a nonprofit membership organization that promotes health (broadly defined) between communities and higher educational institutions.
