This opportunity is fully remote and open to anyone interested. If you are interested in public history, this project would especially be a good fit! RACIAL RESTRICTIVE COVENANTS PROJECT ? VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY What is the Racial Restrictive Covenants Project The language of segregation and exclusion haunts the cities and suburbs of Washington State. Racist restrictions, although now illegal, remain in the deeds and other property records of hundreds of neighborhoods, a toxic residue from the decades when racial segregation was allowed, indeed promoted, by local governments throughout the state. The Racial Restrictive Covenants Project is a public history project dedicated to identifying and mapping racial covenants in Washington state. This project was authorized in May of 2021 by the state legislature under SHB 1335. To date the project has identified documents covering about 20,000 properties in King County and the work will be continuing in every county across the state! How do I volunteer? We need your help! We recently launched our Zooniverse page which allows people within our community to get involved in the research! On Zooniverse volunteers will be reading property deeds with suspected restrictions, confirming and transcribing the racial covenants, and answering a few simple questions. The process only takes a couple of minutes and volunteers can look through as few or as many as they like! Volunteers are a crucial part of this research and would not be possible without the help of members of our community. For every 15 documents that a volunteer examines this will count as one volunteer hour served. Time spent attending one of our weekly transcription sessions can also be counted as one volunteer hour. If a student has trouble examining 15 documents in an hour they can reach out to us and we can work with them to come up with something more manageable. Please email me at jwoods34@uw.edu or wacovenants@gmail.com for more information. You can also sign up for our newsletter and attend one of our weekly transcription sessions. This information can be found on our website. Additionally, please share this information with anyone who you think may be interested! Thank you! SUMMER 2022 HSTRY 498 A LATINX: AN AMERICAN HEMISPHERIC HISTORY SLN: 11771 Tuesdays 12:40pm - 2:50pm, Full-term Ileana Rodriguez-Silva This course will focus on the multiple journeys of the heterogenous communities living in what it has become known today as the United States but whose ancestry and living experiences connect them to those Latin American countries previously under Portuguese and Spanish colonial control. We will primarily investigate the struggles, negotiations, and forms of resistance unleashed by colonial rule and continuing structures of coloniality that have led many to cross into, and sometimes out of, US political borders. Undoubtedly, we will consider how and why such borders have been drawn, shifted, made porous, and/or hardened at different historical moments. And, we will uncover how hierarchies of difference such as ethno-race, gender, sexuality, language, and religion have affected the experiences of displacement, migration, resettlement, community building, remittances, and return. Our journey will begin in the nineteenth century but we will spend most of our time in the twentieth century as we uncover how broader community designations such as Spanish, Hispanic, Latino/a, and Latinx have emerged, have been deployed for different reasons, and what are their limits. The course aims to explore different nodes of Latinx life in the United States such as New York City, Miami, Chicago, El Paso, and Los Angeles. We will learn about the various cycles of agricultural labor, manufacture, and service work that have made Latinx labor critical while also probe the authoritarian regimes, civil wars, climate-related disasters, and economic shifts in the Americas that have prompted peoples to move. Ultimately, this course argues that these are not isolated factors in one side or another of an always-shifting political border but that these are symbiotic, hemispheric and global dynamics occasioned by colonialism, imperial formations, and capitalism. This class will meet in-person once a week as a seminar for discussion of assigned readings. We will have assigned one primary text which includes primary sources and historical essays, organized chronologically. We will be practicing primary document analysis regularly. Nevertheless, this is mainly a research course. Students are expected to produce a 12-15-page research essay based on primary and secondary materials. Paper topics have to be directly related to class matters and approved in advanced by the professor. Students will be assessed in varied ways including weekly reading reflections, short writing assignments based on reading materials, in-class exercises such as short presentations on readings or ongoing research work, and the final paper (which will be scaffolded throughout the two terms to move the process along). This is a Writing (W) credit course. The Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies is pleased to announce that our scholarship applications for 2022-2023 are open now! We have seven scholarships and fellowships that are open to undergraduate and graduate students, with funding that ranges from $5,000 to $10,000 depending on the award. On top of that, students only need to fill out ONE online application to apply for all of our awards! We will do the work on our end to determine which awards you qualify for. Please visit https://labor.washington.edu/scholarships-and-prizes for more information on each of our scholarships and to access the online application. The due date for applications is Monday, May 30th at 11:59pm. In addition, please subscribe to our monthly newsletter, Labor Talks, for updates about funding opportunities, scholarship information sessions, and more. For any questions, please reach out to Yasmin Ahmed at ypahmed@uw.edu! Union Summer - Paid Labor Internship Union Summer is a seven week, fully paid internship in the Seattle area that provides experiences in the daily work of labor unions, from member engagement to political campaigns, as well educational days focused on labor history and other topics. The program runs from June 27-August 5, 2022, and the deadline to apply is Friday, May 13. We can't recommend this enough - Union Summer has long been a door for UW students to find employment in organized labor and related fields. Many UW alums have found long-term opportunities through the program. At the very least, it is a great hands on opportunity in the day-to-day work of building a movement for social justice. We serve nearly 5,000 students with over 8,000 one-to-one writing appointments each academic year. Our tutors are undergraduate and graduate students from a wide range of academic fields, and we provide a rich learning environment for writers and tutors alike. While we seek candidates who have strong writing skills in their chosen academic fields, we are most interested in those candidates who demonstrate reflection, metacognition, and empathetic listening. Tutoring is an intellectually and emotionally demanding position that requires high levels of initiative, responsibility, and critical thinking. Tutors will be chosen based on their ability to enact our question-focused, non-directive tutoring philosophy as well as their oral communication skills. We value and honor diverse experiences and perspectives, strive to create welcoming and respectful learning environments, and promote access, opportunity, and justice for all. We seek tutors who demonstrate an appreciation for, a sensitivity to, and respect for writers from all backgrounds. Please note: New tutors must be available for orientation and weekly training on Fridays from 3:30-5:00 pm for the duration of Fall quarter. This training is paid time. * Maintain a consistent weekly schedule for tutoring, arriving punctually and finding a substitute tutor for any shifts that must be missed. * Hold writer-focused, 45-minute one-to-one and group tutoring sessions. * Adopt our OWRC non-directive, conversation-based tutoring philosophy. * Electronically document the work of each tutoring session or other OWRC activity. * Participate in monthly staff meetings, professional development, and required reflective writing led by OWRC professional staff and peer mentors Requirements & Qualifications * Enrollment, part or full-time (at least 6 credits for undergraduates), at the University of Washington during each quarter of employment, except summer quarter. * Previous tutoring, coaching, or mentoring experience, especially with diverse populations. * Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including genuine commitment to the interests and goals of fellow learners. * Ability to work with others to help them identify their strengths and difficulties as writers and researchers, prioritize their concerns, and successfully navigate complex strategies for working through those concerns. * Experience working with diverse or underrepresented students to support them in navigating institutional systems and achieving their articulated goals. * Demonstrated growth and/or academic success in chosen field of study. * Familiarity with useful research and writing skills and the academic strategies associated with different fields. Preferred Qualifications * "Growth" or resilience mindset. * Experience with peer mentoring or leadership. * Ability to be reflective and metacognitive about tutoring practices. * Interest in and readiness for larger ongoing projects of the Writing and Research Center, including task group projects, workshops, and research into and scholarly articulation of writing center practices and programs. Such skills might include, but are not limited to: project management, event planning, HTML coding, web design, social media and marketing, database skills, familiarity with different research methods, etc. Learning Competencies The OWRC provides student employees with a meaningful work experience. Some intended learning competencies that will be developed in the Peer Tutor role include: * Building and fostering collaborative relationships in a diverse workplace * Strengthening oral and written communication skills * Increased capacity for self-reflection and metacognition * Development of a broad range of learning, teaching, and writing strategies * Time management and the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work Supervision This position will report to the Director of the OWRC and is supervised by the Assistant Director and Administrative Assistant. Job Hours Undergraduate tutors must be available for a minimum of 10.5 hours per week for Peer Tutoring, including required training, staff meetings, and professional development. Graduate tutors must be available for a minimum of 7.5 hour per week for Peer Tutoring, including required training, staff meetings, and professional development. Tutors work a regular weekly schedule of one-to-one and group tutoring sessions, with shifts of no more than 4.5 hours per day for a total of 7.5 or 10.5 to 19.5 hours per week, based on terms of employment and employee availability. Work hours vary based on tutoring schedule; some evening and weekend hours are required. Schedules are based upon workload, class schedule, and other academic responsibilities. Ideal candidates can give at least one academic year commitment. Application Process The application process includes two steps. Step 1. Complete the General Writing Tutor online application form. Step 2. Submit the following materials listed below as one document: * A letter of application, addressing your reasons for interest in this position and how your past academic and professional experiences prepare you for OWRC tutoring. * A curriculum vitae (CV) or resume, indicating your range of academic, research, professional, and volunteer experience. * A writing sample of no more than five pages, double-spaced, in length (this may be a fragment of a longer text), which demonstrates your success as a writer. All academic genres welcome; samples must include a head-note (one substantive paragraph) describing the context (writing situation) in which you produced the piece and a description of what you learned about yourself as a writer by completing it and now reflecting on it. The above materials must be submitted electronically (combined as a single MS Word document or PDF) to the OWRC online application form. Hard-copy or emailed applications will be accepted only with specific advanced approval from the OWRC Coordinator. Applicants are welcome to bring materials in for writing center appointments prior to submission. Reserve your spot online on our sign up page. Ours is a very competitive hiring process. We are looking for applicants with a genuine and demonstrated interest both in bettering the culture of writing on this campus and in serving their peers. Applications are currently open; search 'Concussion Alliance' on Handshake or reach out to us via our Contact page for more information about applying. This 8-week remote educational internship is open to undergraduate students. We will happily consider applicants from outside the US and Canada, though we do ask that interns are available from 10 am to 2 pm PST (1 pm to 5 pm EST) during the weekdays for ease of scheduling our synchronous activities. Our program is rooted in building a strong sense of community among our internship cohorts - attending synchronous meetings and activities is critical. The internship includes daily multimedia concussion curricula covering all areas of the injury, an Expert Guest Speaker series featuring leaders in the field, weekly guided discussions and community social hours, opportunities for mentoring from current medical school students for interns interested in medicine, and more! Interns gain research literacy and science writing skills writing for our Concussion Update newsletter and take on major research and writing projects, creating and updating resource pages for ConcussionAlliance.org. The internship is a ~30 hour/week commitment for the duration; work scheduling is flexible outside of 1-2 daily synchronous meetings in the time range mentioned above. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide stipends for interns at this time; however, many colleges and universities have funding programs to support unpaid internships. Let me know if you have any questions! To help prepare for registration, please find a .doc and .pdf file of the Department of History's undergraduate History courses for Autumn 2022 (titled "Lecture Courses AUT 2022") attached to this email. We will send an email next week with descriptions of the Junior (HSTRY 388) and Senior (HSTRY 494 or 498) Seminars for Autumn 2022. Please note that we recommend that students complete one or two of upper division (300 or 400 level) History courses before taking the Junior Seminar. Students must successfully complete the Junior Seminar before they can take the Senior Seminar, so we encourage you to plan ahead (but please note that you can request an add code and register for a Senior Seminar if you are currently taking the Junior Seminar this quarter). You will need to email histadv@uw.edu for an add code (since these are small courses, we recommend emailing us sooner rather than later for an add code as seats may fill up). Lastly, students planning to graduate at the end of Summer 2022, Autumn 2022, or Winter 2023 can schedule a Graduation Application meeting! You can do so here: https://history.washington.edu/advising. Have a good weekend!
