The Thomas Hankins Prize was established by a generous donor to recognize the best essay, independent study project, or honors thesis devoted to HPS scholarship (taken to include work in philosophy of science, history of science, integrated HPS scholarship, and science studies more broadly) by a UW undergraduate, as judged by a committee of faculty associated with the HPS major. The prize is awarded annually and carries a cash prize of $500.

To submit an essay, project, or thesis for consideration, send the submitted work via email to Gina Gould <philadv at uw.edu<mailto:philadv at uw.edu>> with "Thomas Hankins Prize" in the subject line and a brief statement asking for your work to be considered for the prize in the body of the email. The deadline for consideration is Thursday, May 4th at 9:00 a.m. All students are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship recipient must agree to attend the Philosophy Department Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. (PST). This ceremony will be in Savery Hall.

Also, by making a submission, you are agreeing that should you receive the prize, your name can be released publicly. This could include, but is not limited to, announced in the department's newsletter and on social media, and displayed on the department's "honors wall" in Savery hall.

Yes! You can use something you wrote in class.
