From histadv at uw.edu Fri Dec 1 07:38:35 2023 From: histadv at uw.edu (HISTORY UNDERGRADUATE ADVISORS) Date: Sun Mar 24 10:43:45 2024 Subject: [Histmaj] Great 2 credit History class for Winter 2024, on Seattle and the Salish Sea: Building and Belonging In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi all- This is an excellent class if you want to add 2 fairly straitforward credits to your Winter quarter. Each year, the Department of History hosts the History Lecture Series, showcasing amazing research from our faculty. It is a free series which always brings large crowds. UW students in any department can also sign up for a 2 credit class in Winter 2024, meeting Thursdays from 300-420PM. This low-key class is the perfect addition to a schedule if you need to a few more credits, or if you want to explore the history of Seattle and the surrounding area! HSTRY 201 B is a unique opportunity because it incorporates the UW History Department's annual public lecture series into a colloquium-style class. The Winter 2024 lecture series is called Seattle and the Salish Sea: Building and Belonging. One key theme is how different groups in the population, including Indigenous peoples, diverse immigrants, and peoples of color, experienced or identified with Seattle and the Puget Sound area. Another emphasis is Seattle's increasing connection to the rest of the world. The course aims to situate the city's story within regional, national, and global contexts. Students are expected to attend the five public lectures on Wednesday evenings, Jan 10 - Feb. 7. The group then meets the next day--Thursday afternoons, Jan. 11 - Feb. 8--to discuss the week's lecture along with some supplemental readings (one or two articles per meeting, available on-line). A final meeting on Feb. 15 should provide a chance to review and assess what has been learned. The lecture series Seattle and the Salish Sea is free, but students in HSTRY 201 B are asked to register for the series in order to reserve seats. See the department website for the link to the series. Registering for the series starts in mid December. HSTRY 201 B counts for 2 credits and is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis. Grades are based on two brief papers (1-2 paragraphs each), a longer paper (2-3 pages), and participation in discussions. The instructor (Professor Emeritus John Findlay) will suggest prompts for the writing assignments. Please reach out if you have questions about the class or the series, Sincerely, Mark Mark Weitzenkamp and Tracy Maschman Morrissey History Undergraduate Advising University of Washington Smith Hall 315 Box 353560 Seattle, WA 98195 vm: 206.543.5691 fax: 206.543.9451 depts.washington.edu/history Please click here to schedule an advising appointment! Our department has several different scholarships and awards, and plans to give out approximately $200,000 in scholarships and awards to students this year - why not apply and see if one of these students could be you?! You can read about our scholarships and awards, and find a link to the application, on our Department of History website: https://history.washington.edu/scholarships-and-awards. The application deadline is Wednesday, March 19th, 2024. A quick note - you will need two letters of recommendation from faculty as part of the application. If you are concerned that a faculty member may not know or remember you - reach out to them! Remind them of what course(s) you took with them, how you did in that course, what you enjoyed/learned from the course (and History in general), your goals, and any other information you feel might help them write a good letter of recommendation for you. If you're feeling nervous, use this as good (and low risk, potential high reward!) practice for advocating for yourself and networking! If you have any questions about the application, please contact us at histadv@uw.edu. Don't forget to also submit your nominations for the Pressly Endowed Prize for Outstanding History or Social Studies Teacher in a Washington School! Did you have a spectacular History or Social Studies teacher who you'd like to see get recognition for their hard work and passion for teaching? Then please scroll to the bottom of the Department of History Scholarships and Awards webpage (at the above link) and nominate them for this award! (All majors are welcome to nominate someone, so please feel free to encourage your friends to nominate their teachers, too!) Good luck! Thank you!
