From histadv at uw.edu Fri Jan 6 11:32:02 2023 From: histadv at uw.edu (HISTORY UNDERGRADUATE ADVISORS) Date: Sun Mar 24 10:43:38 2024 Subject: [Histmaj] Still Looking for a 2 credit course for Winter 2023? In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: HSTRY 201A History Lecture Series Colloquium "Medieval Made Modern." (2 cr., Th 1200PM-120PM, taught by Prof. Robin Chapman Stacey) This 2-credit, C/NC colloquium is designed to be taken in conjunction with the History Lecture Series for Winter of 2023, "Medieval Made Modern." As a culture, we are literally surrounded by symbols and images taken from the medieval period, as is evident from the multi-genre popularity of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Martin's Game of Thrones. Theologians, politicians, artists and advertisers have been reimagining the Middle Ages ever since 1500 CE, when the medieval period is usually regarded as having ended. We are the beneficiaries of literally centuries of reinterpreting the period and its inhabitants-to such an extent indeed that the Middle Ages to which we are responding often bears little resemblance to what the medieval persons in question would recognize as their own experience. Further information about the Lecture Series can be found here. Internships Information Session on Zoom In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Internships in D.C. through The Washington Center Information Session: Thursday, 4-5pm on Zoom Click here to Register The Washington Center (TWC) runs an internship program in Washington, D.C., that is open to all UW undergraduates (all majors welcome) and provides comprehensive service, including internship placement and housing and career coaching. Placements include government agencies, international organizations, corporations, nonprofits, museums, and arts organizations. Hundreds of UW students have participated in this program since UW's affiliation in 1977, and many made connections that led to post-degree employment. At the information session, a Washington Center representative and Meera Roy, Political Science adviser and UW's liaison to TWC, will discuss the structure of the program, scholarships, the application process, and UW credit The program is affordable for many students. Students on financial aid receive their aid. WA State residents receive a $2500 scholarship that makes the cost of attending the program comparable to many study abroad programs. Non-residents receive a $1000 scholarship and may pay less for this program than the estimated cost of attending UW for a quarter. Additional scholarships may be available through TWC and UW. TWC's facilities are accessible to students who have disabilities. In addition, their Disability Services Coordinator will assist with accommodation at the internship and programming sites. These are the upcoming application deadlines: * Summer 2023 (Jun 6-Aug 4): Early Deadline, Feb 15; Regular Deadline, Mar 15 * Autumn 2023 (Aug 29-Dec 1): Early Deadline, March 29; Regular Deadline, April 26 * Spring 2024, (Jan-Apr): Early Deadline: October; Regular Deadline: November - specific dates TBA Regardless of your major, there is an internship in D.C. for you! We hope you all are having a great start to the new year. We at Capillaries: The Journal of Medical Humanities believe that writing and art have real power now more than ever, to help us unpack our thoughts. Thus, we offer our journal to you as a space to decompress and reflect on personal, community, national, and global issues. Capillaries is a student-run project at the University of Washington. Since February 2018, our mission has been to provide the UW community (students, staff, and faculty) with the opportunity to reflect on experiences with medicine, healing, illness, and/or grief through prose, poetry, and artwork. Furthermore, Capillaries aims to support students and the community in their healthcare journeys and to promote greater understanding between the sciences and the humanities. In past publications, we shared stories of love and loss, of mental health and disordered eating, of coming to terms with one's identity, and of understanding what it means to be a global citizen in the 21st century. For our Winter 2023 issue, feel free to write and create art about any experience or topic you feel comfortable sharing ?we simply hope that this journal brings you some solace and space for meditation. ~For previous editions of the journal and submission guidelines, see our website https://www.capillariesjournal.com/ ~ *Submission Form for Winter 2023 https://forms.gle/sjcqCbaWCpo4Szh27* ~ Please submit your piece(s) by *February 10, 2023 @ 11:59 PM * Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at cjuw@uw.edu if you have any questions. Over the past two years, thirty fellows from across the country participated in weekly seminars on discrete topics, from what it means to get a History PhD, to how to approach the application process. Past fellows have described our Program as an ?invaluable experience? that ?answered so many questions and relieved many anxieties? about the prospect of graduate school. Another shared that it was ?the highlight of [their] week over the last few months.? We are excited to meet and learn with a new cohort of future historians. For 2023, our seminars will continue to be held remotely on Fridays from 10am to 12pm Pacific, beginning in March and ending in May. Over the course of the sessions, fellows can expect to meet Berkeley faculty, PhD alumni, current graduate students, and staff. At the start of summer, we'll pair fellows with a faculty and/or a graduate student mentor for individualized support and to discuss their possible next steps. We would be grateful if you could share this information and the attached flyer with your colleagues and students. Applications are due at 11:59pm on Friday, February 17th. For more information, please check out our website or contact our committee at history-pipeline@berkeley.edu. Thanks and kind regards, Waldo E.
