[Histmaj] Great 2 credit History class for Winter 2024, on Seattle and the Salish Sea: Building and Belonging

Hi all-

This is an excellent class if you want to add 2 fairly straitforward credits to your Winter quarter.

Each year, the Department of History hosts the History Lecture Series, showcasing amazing research from our faculty.  It is a free series which always brings large crowds.  UW students in any department can also sign up for a 2 credit class in Winter 2024, meeting Thursdays from 300-420PM.  This low-key class is the perfect addition to a schedule if you need to a few more credits, or if you want to explore the history of Seattle and the surrounding area!

HSTRY 201 B is a unique opportunity because it incorporates the UW History Department's annual public lecture series into a colloquium-style class.  The Winter 2024 lecture series is called Seattle and the Salish Sea: Building and Belonging.  One key theme is how different groups in the population, including Indigenous peoples, diverse immigrants, and peoples of color, experienced or identified with Seattle and the Puget Sound area.  Another emphasis is Seattle's increasing connection to the rest of the world.  The course aims to situate the city's story within regional, national, and global contexts.

Students are expected to attend the five public lectures on Wednesday evenings, Jan 10 - Feb. 7.  The group then meets the next day--Thursday afternoons, Jan. 11 - Feb. 8--to discuss the week's lecture along with some supplemental readings (one or two articles per meeting, available on-line).  A final meeting on Feb. 15 should provide a chance to review and assess what has been learned.

The lecture series Seattle and the Salish Sea is free, but students in HSTRY 201 B are asked to register for the series in order to reserve seats. HSTRY 201 B counts for 2 credits and is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis.  Grades are based on two brief papers (1-2 paragraphs each), a longer paper (2-3 pages), and participation in discussions. The instructor (Professor Emeritus John Findlay) will suggest prompts for the writing assignments.
