History majors-

I just wanted to pass along some information about a fairly new minor created by the UW Textual Studies program (https://txtds.uw.edu/). The minor in Textual Studies and Digital Humanities should be of particular interest to History majors, book lovers, and those interested in the intersection between texts and their archival and digital formats.

Undergraduate students can pursue a minor in the interdisciplinary study of the history, present, and future of texts-from scrolls, manuscripts, and printed books to archival documents, digital texts, and textual data.

Students can explore how texts have been written, published, read, circulated, and archived from antiquity to today. Courses include hands-on work with historical texts, archival sources, and contemporary artists' books, as well as with methods for editing, digitizing, exhibiting, and publishing texts.

The minor will be of interest to students thinking about further studies or careers in editing and publishing, libraries and library science, archives, and cultural institutions, and in contexts that involve working with cultural and literary texts in digital and/or archival environments.

It is an interdisciplinary minor built around core classes like:

TXTDS 401 Text Technologies
TXTDS 402 Book Arts
TXTDS 403 Archives, Data, and Databases
TXTDS 404 Texts, Publics and Publications

This is supported by a longer group of elective classes from departments including English, French, the Jackson School of International Studies, History, Art History, Asian Languages and Literature, Middle Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Comparative History of Ideas, and Informatics. Check out the current and upcoming classes on their website.

If you have questions about the program, I recommend emailing Professor Geoffrey Turnovsky (gt2 at uw.edu)

Sincerely,

Mark
